Cirenaica Moreira (b. Havana, 1969)
Cirenaica Moreira graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana with a specialization in the performing arts and her tableau-like photographs reflect this training. In the work, the viewer is presented with a frozen moment in some undisclosed drama, the artist herself playing the lead role. These staged fragments of space and time—replete with anomalous combinations of settings, costumes, and props—are both provocative and disquieting. Recent solo shows include Cirenaica Moriera: Letters from Inxile, La Casona Gallery, Havana (2002) and Cuban Conceptual Photography by Cirenaica Moreira, Centro de Ceatividad Fotográfica del Caribe, Cancun, Mexico (1997). Recent group exhibitions include, Imaging the Spirit: Albert Chong, Juan Carlos Alom & Cirenaica Moreira, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Colorado (2001) and Elb Art Hamburg, Germany (2001). Moreira's work is featured in collections internationally. She lives and works in Havana.
