Javier Guerra (b. Havana, 1969)

Javier Guerra, a leading exponent of Cuba’s “New Realism” movement, in which reality is depicted with an ironic skew, studied art at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Havana and the Escuela Elemental de Arte at Isla de la Juventud. Among his most resonant work are a series of fictional magazine covers on which he presents incongruous combinations of figures and settings to comment on Cuban society, its history, and politics. He has exhibited his work extensively in Cuba and it can be found in many private and public collections internationally. Gallery 106 presented Guerra’s first one-person show in the United States.
