Manuel Piña (b. Havana, 1958)

Manuel Piña graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the Vladimir Polytechnic Institute in Russia in 1983. Piña has received numerous fellowships and awards, including an Andrew Fellowship from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada in 1996 and first prize for contemporary photography from the Casa de las Américas, Havana in 2001. Recent solo exhibitions include Displacement and Encounter: Projects and Utopias, Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Ottawa, Canada (2002) and Spaces, Temptations, Marvelli Gallery, New York (2001). Recent group exhibitions include Shifting Tides: Cuban Photography After the Revolution, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2001) and From the Negative, PARTS Gallery, Minneapolis (2000). Piña lives and works in Havana.
