René Francisco (b. Holguín, 1960)

René Francisco teaches in Cuba and exhibits his works extensively and worldwide. Multitudes of influences and ideas merge in his work and he includes countless references to political, philosophical, and personal themes. His work was included in the Venice and Havana Biennials and Feria ARCO. He has an honorary doctorate in Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. Francisco is an important teacher in Havana at the Instituto Superior de Arte. One of his current and enduring projects “Galeria DUPP” (which means “gallery of pragmatic education”) is an experiment which he and his students together undertake outside the classroom. After creating the work, they take it to the streets for exhibition and mount round-the-clock showings of the works often in the windows of shops and along the sea wall in Havana. In this way they are reaching very large audiences and they extend the classroom in ways that promote horizontal learning and teaching.
